BMW introduced its Vision Neue Klasse at the Munich Auto Show, where the concept vehicle generated significant interest among automotive fans. As noted by BMW AG Chairman Oliver Zipse, the Vision Neue Klasse concept embodies BMW’s commitment to pioneering in essential areas like electrification, digital technology, and sustainability—advances that ensure BMW remains at the forefront of future developments. Beginning in 2025, the Neue Klasse will bring forth innovations and technology that are set to define the automotive landscape for the coming decade, leading BMW into a fresh era.
The design of this car takes a contemporary approach while paying tribute to the original Neue Klasse from the 1960s. Notable features like the shark-nose front and large surfaces are clearly present, but with streamlined, subtle lines. Chrome has been replaced with LED lighting and recycled plastic, while signature BMW elements such as the kidney grille and distinctive rear side window corner design persist. The rear LED lights blend into the bumper, creating a modern 3D look, and the overall aesthetic is more understated than previous BMW models.
Inside, the cabin features yellow seats, a square steering wheel, and no chrome or leather, focusing on a sleek, minimalistic interior. BMW’s latest iDrive technology delivers an impressive digital experience, operated through either voice commands or a touch-sensitive steering wheel panel.
No buttons or controls in sight? This reflects BMW’s vision for future interiors, where physical controls are reduced to a minimum. Interaction between the driver and the car is managed through the BMW Panoramic Vision display, a central screen, and multi-functional buttons on the steering wheel. The panoramic display stretches across the entire windshield, extending to the roof and other areas, and can be controlled by gestures from the driver or passenger, merging real and virtual environments.
As a forward-looking, four-door model, the Vision Neue Klasse aims for a zero-carbon footprint. The sixth-generation BMW eDrive system, paired with an electric powertrain, enhances energy efficiency with sustainable materials, lightweight design, and improved aerodynamics.
Technologically, the Vision Neue Klasse will incorporate new round cell batteries, offering 20% greater energy density than previous versions. The updated eDrive system also enables 30% faster battery charging and increases the driving range by 30%, resulting in a 25% overall efficiency gain.
3D lighting effects enhance user interaction as they approach the vehicle, while color-changing E Ink elements on the lower side windows highlight the sensor areas that enable automatic door opening.
BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse demonstrates that the future of cars can draw inspiration from the past. Could this mark the start of a new trend where classic designs are reimagined with a modern twist? Hyundai’s recent N Vision 74 concept suggests we might be seeing more of this innovative blend.
